Step 1: START-UP - THE FIRST TRAY
☼ On my collection bin, I install my 1st work tray,
☼ At the bottom, I place the supplied starter cardboard,
☼ I soak the coconut fiber in water and let it swell, then arrange it on my starter cardboard,
☼ I install my compost worms,
☼ I cover with the mattress that will serve to maintain humidity.
Don't make any contributions on the1st day, and go gradually over the1st week. The system needs to balance out slowly (mold, fungi, bacteria, macro and micro-organisms need to take their place).
Step 2: INTAKE
☼ I cut up my fresh waste when it's a bit big. I can put: vegetable and fruit peelings, coffee grounds and filters, tea bags, eggshells.
☼ I mix them beforehand with 40% dry cardboard, this will absorb the moisture and provide the necessary carbon,
☼ I arrange them in my work tray,
☼ I cover with the mattress.
I don't put: animal products (meat-fish-cheese), and anything that stings: garlic, onions, citrus fruits (lemon, orange, grapefruit), too acidic for your worms.
Step 3: SETTING UP THE FOLLOWING TRAYS
My first tray is filled:
☼ I remove the humidification mattress from my first tray and install my second work tray on it,
☼ I take 4 good handfuls of material from my first tray and place them in my second, this will seed it (worms, macro and micro-organisms...) and speed up the process,
☼ I make my usual contributions and cover with the mattress.
My second tray is filled:
☼ I follow the same procedure as for my first tray then install my third and final tray.
Step 4: ROTATE THEN COLLECT LOMBRICOMPOST
My third tray is filled:
☼ I bring up the tray at the very bottom and arrange it on top of the two remaining trays,
☼ I leave it under the light, with no mattress and no lid; as the worms flee the light, they will drop back down into the lower trays on their own,
☼ I scrape off the first layers of vermicompost. As soon as I see worms, I wait... and let them descend,
☼ I then gradually empty my work tray.
Here I am with a new, empty tray, ready to welcome my new contributions!
AUTONOMY AND GENEROSITY
The hard-working worms will work day and night, and your vermicomposter can digest up to 500 g of organic waste a day! The worms' intestines are a marvellous factory for producing beautiful "forest soil" (vermicompost), rich in minerals and nutrients, ideal for houseplants and gardens.
Every day, I collect my concentrated liquid fertilizer from the tap at the bottom of the Worm Café®. Diluted 10 times in water, I get up to a liter of natural fertilizer a day! Liquid fertilizer production will vary according to the amount of fertilizer added, the location of your vermicomposter and the temperature.
WELCOME TO THE LAND OF EASY VERMICOMPOSTING!
THE LITTLE MEMO..
☼ Recut your fresh and dry waste to speed up decomposition.
☼ Don't forget the 30-40% dry matter, the famous paper/cardboard. Still like us, they need fiber!
☼ Be careful, never overfeed in one go, as the materials could heat up or ferment, which could harm your little friends.
☼ Good humidity is essential: cover your waste with our humidity mattresses or with an old cotton cloth, wool, burlap... Organic, they'll be eaten by the worms! Be careful, no synthetic fibers.
☼ The temperature inside a home is ideal; they're a bit like us... Let's not forget that you need to reach 14° for them to cuddle and reproduce.
☼ If your vermicomposter is on a balcony, no direct sunlight! Above 36° your little worms will die. Put it in the shade or protect it; a piece of cardboard will act as a canopy...
☼ Add crushed eggshells to a mortar and pestle or blender to regulate any excess acidity. This is natural calcium carbonate, also present in our Vita'Vers+.
☼ Leave the tap open over a container (our bottle is top!) to collect worm tea continuously.
