That's it, I've ordered and received my City Worms vermicomposter, the little worms between us, and I'm off!

Day 1: Once I've seen the assembly video, I watch it twice to make sure I don't miss anything. I open the bag of worms and transfer everyone to the vermicomposter with 2/3 salad leaves and some carrot tops.

Day 2: Darn, I forgot the box! Here are a few scraps from an egg carton, note to self: cut some up in advance so as not to forget in future. In passing, I add another 4 zucchini peels and a tomato core.

Day 3: The user's guide has become my new bedside reading. I'm learning all about my roommates' food preferences: garlic, onions, NO! Thanks for the rhyme Citrus fruits too, so I take the opportunity to get to grips with pot pourris; meat and fish can't be thrown away anyway, "You finish your plate! Thanks Mum.

Day 4: After drying my eggshells (I'm not making this up, the forum has given me lots of good ideas), I grind them up and store them in a small glass jar. It has already found its place on the little shelf under the vermicomposter.

Day 7: I left my new friends alone for a while and today I opened the lid: horror! A white foam has spread over the waste, which is starting to rot! Don't worry, this is only the first stage in the reprocessing of my waste. It will first be softened by bacteria and moulds, and then assimilated by your little protégés."

Phew, our first week is coming to an end. Everyone seems to have survived and my compost worms are even starting to multiply in the humidification mattress. I can now increase my input to 1 or 2 handfuls of waste a day, and the following week I'll be able to put in all my waste.

The plus? At the end of the week, I've already collected juice in my bottle under the vermicomposter. This juice is an excellent sign that my vermicomposter is moist and working properly (Yippee!). I take this first juice and pour it back into my vermicomposter to speed up the process and redistribute the bacteria! The next harvest will be even better!
