It's a question that comes up a lot: should you stir your vermicomposter? In short, we'd say yes, but not too often ..

Why do you need to stir your vermicomposter from time to time?

It's a good idea to stir the top bin of your vermicomposter from time to time to ..:

- aerate it

- bury sweet peelings, which tend to attract midges

- check that our worm friends are doing well

- mix the different types of input, even if a small layer of finely cut cardboard often protects against intruders

Why not do it often?

Do you like to be disturbed at home? No, we suppose not. Well, it's the same with worms.

What's more, if you stir, you let light in, and worms don't like that at all. That's why they wriggle.

Otherwise, they stir the worm compost themselves, so don't hesitate to let them.

How do you stir your worm compost bin?

We have two solutions to suggest so as not to hurt our worm friends:

- your hands, gloved if you like

- a scratch

With your hands

The advantage of stirring with your hands is that you can appreciate the texture of your vermicomposter. If it's too dry, add less cardboard and more moist peelings. If it's too muddy, add more brown cardboard.

With a griffette

The griffette we have in store is specially designed to stir up the inside of your vermicomposter, taking care of your worms without harming them. What's more, thanks to its large teeth, you can stir a great deal.

It can also be used to lift the mat to make your contributions, without getting your hands dirty.
