How to manage your vermicomposter during the vacations is a recurring question during this period. Just like our dogs and cats, we need to know what to do with our worm friends during the vacations.

As you'll see, it's even easier than for our 4-legged friends!

Here's our advice on how to get the best out of them.

How to manage your vermicomposter during the vacations

You won't manage your absence in the same way if it's 1 week or 3 weeks..

I'm going away for 1 week

- Empty the bin

- Feed the vermicomposter normally , without forgetting paper/cardboard.

- Make sure you use a humidifying mattress. You can also use an old woven fabric that is 100% organic: cotton, linen, silk, wool, etc

- Leave the tap running, as this encourages aerobic growth.

I'm going away for 2 weeks

- Empty the drip tray

- Feed the vermicomposter a little more, not forgetting paper/cardboard.

- Be sure to use a humidifying mattress. You can also use an old woven fabric that is 100% organic: cotton, linen, silk, wool, etc

- Leave the tap running, as this promotes aerobic growth.

I'm going away for 3 weeks or more

- Empty the drip tray

Feed your vermicomposter a lot more, don't forget paper/cardboard and add a small handful of Vita Vers + (https://verslaterre.com/categorie-produit/accessoires/accessoires-vitavers-plus/)

- Be sure to use a humidification mattress. You can also use an old woven fabric that's 100% organic: cotton, linen, silk, wool etc..

- Leave the tap open to promote aerobic growth.

Anticipating bad weather while you're away

A quick reminder of the temperatures that regulate the lives of our worm friends:

- below 0°C, they're in danger.

- above 14°C, they reproduce.

- above 35°C, they're in danger.

So it's imperative to look after their well-being by placing the vermicomposter under cover, usually indoors (cellar, garage, storeroom, etc.):

- in summer, to protect them from direct sunlight. Depending on the temperature, a parasol, cardboard, etc. may suffice

- in winter, to protect them from the cold.

- in spring and autumn, to protect them from the rain.

How to restart your vermicomposter on return from vacation

Feed it normally.

And above all, we share our vacation photos on social networks with our friends who've stayed behind to work..

On that note, happy vacations to you all!
